My Teaching Philosophy

Do What Matters: I am dedicated to helping my students improve their musical skills and proficiency. I strongly encourage my students to follow their personal musical aspirations, to refine their abilities, and delve into the music that resonates with them the most.

My Values: I try my best to create a constructive learning environment where students feel supported, respected, and safe. I believe that this approach helps students improve more quickly, enabling them to reach their creative and expressive potential while surpassing their perceived limitations. I am committed to being attentive to the diverse needs of my students.

Experiential Learning: In my lessons, I cover a wide range of subjects, including technique, improvisation, music theory, composition, ear training, analysis, and music production skills, among others. I prioritize the experiential aspects of these skills, with the belief that their application will empower YOU to craft more captivating and expressive music on your instrument or in your songwriting.

Show Up, Have Fun: I fully understand just how scary learning and performing music can be.  While my core commitment lies in helping students advance their musical skills, I advocate for approaching practice with a compassionate and accepting mindset, making room for mistakes, challenges, and performance anxiety as part of the journey. Let us always remember that our shared love for music is what brings us together. The joy of creative expression and the refinement of our skills can be immensely fulfilling. We don’t want to lose our joy in the pursuit of excellence and achievement.

Motivation is Key: I try to help my students tap into their own deep well of intrinsic motivation and curiosity for learning. Creating, practicing, and performing music can be really fun. Seriously! The process of learning music becomes significantly more enjoyable and meaningful when our motivation springs from our values rather than from guilt or fear. You can read about the power of values in learning, goal attainment, and motivational behavioral change here.

Evidence-Based Education: I firmly advocate that educational practices should be grounded in both evidence and personal intuition, rather than relying solely on tradition. My teaching approach is shaped by my extensive professional experience as a music creator and teacher, characterized by an intuitive style. Furthermore, I incorporate contemporary psychological and scientific insights into music education to enhance the learning process."

Music Is Universal & Human: I believe that music is universal. It transcends the constraints of time, spoken language, and cultural boundaries. Music possesses a remarkable capacity to connect people, bringing them together through its beauty, spirituality, emotional resonance, ideas, and participation in cultural movements. Music holds immense power, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share it with you.
